I started programming basic on the Apple II Plus when I was nine years old and have spent over 16 years as a professional application developer, mostly working on Internet applications.
I’ve worked at a lot of start-ups and as a consultant to companies such as Kaiser Permanente, Lucent Technologies, Morgan Stanley, Dell, and Fujitsu. During the last six years, I have worn the hats of a product manager and senior software developer, building digital products and services. My last position was as the senior developer (employee No. 2) at a small social networking start-up that was recently sold to Electronic Arts. Currently, I work on the same project as a product manager.
Throughout my career, I have been fascinated by design, design thinking, interaction design, experience design, and branding. But nowadays, this fascination is my job, and I’m faced with important questions daily: How do these disciplines relate to so many aspects of product development and product management? And how can I engage with developers and product managers to communicate the importance of learning and applying these disciplines to their work? As I study these problems, I’m able to infuse many of these design elements into my everyday work, and to evangelize them within my team.
For those wondering how I ever got into design with an engineering background, I think the fact that I am an ENTP has a lot to do with it.
